Default China opens 18 day freight train service from China to UK

China opens 18 day freight train service from China to UK
---------------------------------------------------------

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...train-britain/

Ships take about a month for container transport,
planes about 3 days or more and is expensive to very expensive for heavy cargo,
but heavy containers now can travel between China and UK
directly in 18 days thanks to new service opened up by
China between China and the UK.

These trains have been running for a while but stop in Europe.
Now they will arrive in UK

That gives the impression that a single train does the whole journey.
AIUI, it doesn't. It needs several different trains because of the
different track gauges used in different countries, and the containers
have to be transferred from each train to the next one. Not quite as
seamless as it appears!

Seems right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Asian_Railway says

Four different major rail gauges (which measures the distance between
rails) exist across the continent: most of Europe, as well as Turkey,
Iran, China, and the Koreas use the 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) gauge,
known as Standard gauge; Russia, and the former Soviet republics use a
1,520 mm (4 ft 11 27⁄32 in) gauge; Finland uses a 1,524 mm (5 ft) gauge;
most of the railways in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka use
the 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) gauge, known as Indian gauge; and most of
Southeast Asia has 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge. For the most
part the TAR would not change national gauges; mechanized facilities
would be built to move shipping containers from train to train at the
breaks of gauge.

The UK uses standard gauge (for regular and high-speed trains).

I doubt it - there use gamma ray scanners for containers everywhere.
