Vince Cable lost the plot - VAT by
JMS
I used to think that Vince Cable was probably the only sane minister
in the ConDem coalition. However, my view has now changed:
Sainsbury's have set up a Channel Islands company to sell DVDs, CDs,
and games - the transactions do not attract VAT under an arcane EU
tax relief directive.
However Cable - Business Secretary - has his finger on the retailer's
pulse:

How would you invest a cash lump sum? by
nospam@anytime.thx
Although I'm not lucky enough to have won the lottery myself I can't
help wondering "What if...?"
So I'm just going to throw the scenario out to see what others think.
You're a UK citizen who's just discovered you've won the lottery!
It's been a good week for winning tickets so you've had to share the
jackpot with several others but you're still £1,000,000 richer!

Meerkats by
Windmill[_2_]
Are they primarily merkin meercats, Mumbai meercats, Meccan meercats,
or Manchu meercats?
Does one of the above lead the way, after which all others jump on the
bandwagon?

Ireland bails out its banks and now Ireland's bust. Is there a lesson? by
Dave
I don't understand why the Irish government didn't let its banks go
bust. (e.g. Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish) What exactly would be the
problem here? Would more damage have been done in the long run by
letting nature take its course? (Contagion is a powerful word here.)
Why did the Irish state have to take the bank debt onto its own
balance sheet? As a sovereign entity couldn't it just write...

Tax credits question by
Rasta Pickles
Wading through the form to see if my wife and I are eligible for tax
credits, it appears to be based on April 2009-2010 earnings?
Am I missing something? I can't see what relevance my earnings for
that period have to my status in November 2010?

Trust Deed advice by
John Boy1979
Hi,
Can anyone help. I have a lot of debt, well about £22,000 in total (a mixture of credit cards and loans) and have been looking into doing a Trust Deed. Ive read you can pay it for 3 years and then it done with but I live in a rented flat. Will I have to tell my landlord about the Trust Deed? I dont want to get kicked out if he is not happy with it? Also how badly would it affect my credit...

NS&I Premium Bond winnings: new warrant design (rant) by
Allan[_2_]
Just had a Premium Bond Prize. There was an insert in the envelope:
"New warrant design coming soon"
"NS&I will be introducing a new warrant design ... from January 2011"
So they've managed to change the warrant design, but haven't managed to
replace the warrants with BACS payments (or even offer it as an
alternative). I wonder how much the new warrant design cost: what a
waste of time and...

Insurance Co. threats by
Windmill[_2_]
When a claim call is answered by a machine which begins by warning
about prosecution for fraud, and this is followed by a live person
making similar remarks, it seems to me fair to call those comments
threats.
Their system asks that you begin by entering the policy number, so they
should know that you've never claimed on that policy, and have made
only two small claims in many decades.
At a...

FSCS compensation - who pays? by
anon[_3_]
Sadly I invested in the Keydata (FSA authorised) "death bonds"
offering a "low risk" 7.5% annual income in 2006.
Better news - at least I did it inside an ISA which it has been proven
by the FSA not valid for ISA investement - despite the brochures
soliciting this.
I have been informed by the FSCS I will not be liable for tax on the
income for this "invalid ISA investment".
Keydata is now...
