Interesting letter from the DVLA by
Rob[_5_]
Got a letter from the DVLA about a tax disc refund which says "We cannot
process your refund for one of three reasons. Read the reasons below and
decide which one it might be and then follow the instructions overleaf
for sorting out that reason."
It just sounds really silly for them to say "We can't process your
refund but we don't know why - please tell us!"
Spoke to someone there on the...

Unusual Credit Card Process by
JMS
Back in August I started a new credit card with my bank.
I am pretty confident that I signed a DD mandate to pay off full
amount each month.
I looked at the status of the CC online yesterday - and saw that there
was a current balance of £700ish to pay - I knew that I had not spent
£700 in the last month.
When I looked at the statements since August - I saw that I had in
fact not paid any amount...

Using Excel to analyse and batch by
Plac
Hi all
I am an Excel "expert" and know my way around Double Entry but I am
not a Tax Expert. I am trying to put together a CV showing what I can
do to take care of the humdrum office trivia, as well as the more
serious stuff.
My introduction is here and if anyone would care to proof read it for
errors I would be very grateful. I would also appreciate a link to
Sage Nominal Codes that are...

Clydesdale Bank has been ordered to compensate a proportion of its mortgage
customers whose repayments were increased after a computer error.
Those due to receive a settlement are among the 18,000 Clydesdale customers
on variable rate mortgages - including 10,000 in Scotland - who faced
increases in their...

Acting as mortgage provider for the kids by
Albert Koelmans
Hi,
My daughter and son-in-law are buying their first home. We can afford to
lend them the money, and charge a lower interest rate than the bank does
(which is still a lot better than what we get as interest from the bank),
and keep the money in the family. I am wondering about e.g. tax
implications here. Will my daughter have to pay tax on this? Is it
possible to legally structure this as...

Pension Settlement spousal pension by
Davao
Hi all.
I have more than a half a shout at voluntary redundancy in the near
future.
I am 55 and stand to receive my LGPS pension without acturial
reduction.
This pension includes a spousal pension in the event of my clogs
acquiring a status of 'Popped'
eg, Fall under the wheels of a bus.
The spousal pension after I stop breathing will be about £4000
However, the spousal pension is based upon the...

The Irish Bailout, How It Works by
Gordon H[_3_]
It is a slow day in a damp little Irish town. The rain is beating down
and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and
everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich German tourist
is driving through the town, stops at the local hotel and lays a €100
note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms
upstairs in order to pick one to...

Prepayment meters and online payment by
Fredxx
I have recently moved and inherited a prepayment meter. With all the hassle
in the past with credit meters I don't dislike the idea of having a
prepayment meter.
However I'm not so keen on the tariffs.
I note that BG used to have an online payment system, but it wasn't any
cheaper than going to the local shop and paying by credit card.
I would have thought an online payment would be...

Transfer pension into a SIPP - No ! by
Jim[_10_]
My mrs left a job in 1978 with a "frozen" pension.
It was due to be taken in Aug 2010 when she was 60.
They have offered her:
1. A pension of 1100 per year, or
2. 5000 + a pension of 760 per year
We think (2) is much better than (1), but would prefer to take a
"transfer value" into a SIPP, then take 25% lump and do draw down.

I typically give my sons a cheque as a Christmas gift. One of them has

Barclays No Contact Cards by
Gordon H[_3_]
Anyone got one of these cards which allow purchases up to £15 without
PIN input?
A R4 Moneybox listener was complaining loudly today because she was told
she couldn't opt out of this arrangement, although there was a kind of
grudging response that they might consider issuing cards which were
opted out to those who objected strongly enough.
(No doubt after the BBC contacted them).

Billionaires, Russian and otherwise by

How do they do it?
About 10 years after the dissolution of the USSR, Russian billionaires
appeared on the scene.
Something similar seems to have happened in a similar timeframe
here and elsewhere.
If you assume that these people somehow managed to start with one
million, they would have had to double their worth every year to reach

Failure to file P11D(b) by
Peter Burke[_3_]
Looks like I forgot to file a P11D(b) (Return of NICs due in relation to
P11D) when I filed my P11Ds this year and have been assessed for penalty.
No payments are due but it appears I should have filed a null return.
Is the penalty absolute or does it follow the self assessment principle
that you can't be charged a penalty greater than the tax due (ie zero in
this case)?
Any assistance...

People Begging for a House Price Crash by
Maria[_11_]
What's wrong with them? They don't seem to realise what will happen if
prices crash - those yearning for a crash (which presumably is either
because they resent people having property of high value, or because
they can't afford to buy themselves), seem to think that a crash will
result in a glut of cheap property. Large numbers of people who bought
over recent years had high % mortgages,...
