Credit Cards (Barclaycard alternatives) by root
Hi group, I've only ever had one Credit Card - a Barclaycard which I've had for almost 11 months now. I've always preferred debit cards but changed my mind last year as I could get purchase protection with most (all?) credit cards. I went for Barclaycard, purely because everyone had one and they were pretty standard. I wasn't (and still I'm not) interested in interest rates as I always tend...

Populists view British government support of the criminal 9-11 Frame-up regime as an act hostile to the people of the US -- we will remember later. by Dick Eastman
The British government has sided with a criminal coup of American billionaires against the people and constitution of the United States. We regard this as war. We will not forget what you have done when Americans regain control from the Anglo-American finance and drug criminals. We will seek the overthrow of your ruling elite as zealously as you have sought to overthrow the people of the...

Elderly father - Money in savings by Paul W
My Dad is now nearly 70. Lives on his own in a flat that is almost paid for. Got around £35K in savings etc. Aware that as he gets older there may eventually be the need to require some form of assistance or whatever if his health deteriorates. Whats the best thing to do with this money? Is he better off giving it to me and putting it in my name or something?

PIN fraud by Ian Jenkins
I had my wallet stolen last week (from the office) - my Switch debit cards and two VISA cards were used the same day for a total of £3600+ of fraudulent transactions. The main problem is with £1300 of cashpoint withdrawals across the three cards, within 4 minutes, at the same Barclays cashpoint. My bank and credit card company are disputing liability, on the grounds that my PIN...

Money orders. by Justin gregg
I know this is a simple question, but what exactly is a money order? Is it for the USA only, or can one get them in the UK - perhaps they are called something else over here? Thanks.

capital gains calculation on sale of 2nd property by Simon
I sold a flat last year. It used to be our main residence before we moved out and rented it out. I'd appreciate a sanity check on the capital gains calculations. I hope the calculation might prove useful for other folks in the future. Especially if its correct! Disposal proceeds £79950 minus costs £3689 (legal plus estate agent plus clearance and refurbishment costs)

Reinvesting interesting free credit? by Louise
I just received Egg card today with a £10,000 credit limit and was thinking of taking advantage of the 0% offer (until 1/10). If I were to transfer £9,000 into my ING account, other than paying the 2% monthly credit card charge is there anything else I should know or be aware of? Obviously I would not touch the ING account until the end of September. Will this help or damage my credit rating?...

Selling/Cancelling endowment early by Paul W
Got a 25 year endowment which is now about half way through... Originally, it was going to be used as part of an endowment mortgage. Wisely we're not on full replayment. I've kept the endowment going (for now). Whats the best plan with this bearing in mind the returns are'nt great at the moment? And I could do with the cash :-) Is it best to cancel or sell ? If so whats the best place to do...

Savings certificates: 5-year maturity values by Allan Gould
Thanks to those people who answered a couple of my questions on Sav Certs. I've done some very rudimentary calculations. My findings are at (pdf) http://makeashorterlink.com/?J2DA13928 It's interesting that on the day I wrote the item, NS changed their rates with the fixed-rate rates going up and the index-linked rates going down. This does not appear to have happened much before (my...

Estate agent question... by nospam
....OK, so not directly finance related, but how likely is it that an estate agent will reveal why the previous purchaser ditched the purchase at draft contract stage? I'm getting worried that it was due to a bad survey and I'm just about to arrange mine and thought I could save the hassle if the estate agent would just say - "oh because they couldn't afford it anymore" or something like that. I...

property boom and G Brown's eggy face by Jim
There's been quite a bit about boom, brown and bust on the property-crash website and there's unsurprisingly plenty of stuff about Brown's dignity relying considerably on the property boom sustaining or landing softly. Any thoughts on Browns competence? Certainly he must be swelling the public coffers from any (and there must be many!) house sales over £263k now attracting CGT after a death . ...
