The role varies depending on the size of the Company but in a small
Company probably along the lines of:
Preparation and monitoring of Budgets
Management and annual accounts
Management of income and expenditure
PAYE and payroll
VAT registration and returns
Insurance and Pensions

In a large Company they would be responsible for managing the team who
were doing the above but still responsible for financial performance,
financial compliance, reporting etc.

The financial controller supervises accounting and financial reporting
within an organization. They may be expected to:

i) Manage the Finance function to ensure accurate management of all
financial data and that accounts are produced consistently within
company policies and timetables

ii) Report into the General Manager and work alongside Area Financial
Controllers to deliver commercial business objectives and financial
targets

iii) Be responsible for the efficient running of the Accounts
Department, as well as Purchasing and IT within the property.

All that could be achieved through review, evaluation, planning and
instigating of appropriate action for the company to achieve its
sales, costs and profitability targets.

(Would that be too brief enough for your professor?)
