Default roles requiring FSA approved person status?

Are there any roles in asset management/ stockbroking which, you don't need FSA approved person status to do?

I don't want to do back office admin. I really want to be either predicting market/ industry trends and where to invest money or dealing with clients, as an advisor or investor relations role. I am asking the Q because I believe that something in my past may prevent me from passing the approved persons criteria.
